Mosley Street

Pavilion Insertion

8 Mosley Street, Newcastle, NE1 1YE

For this project, we were tasked with creating an installation inside of the Mosley Street building. During this project, the aim was to understand how to utilise a space efficiently, whilst working within space restrictions. This project also required the model to be made from one material. The objective was to understand the properties of the material and how it can be used to create a structure that supports itself.

The Idea.

For this project, we were tasked with creating an indoor pavilion for the ground floor of 8 Mosley Street. During the background research about pavilions, parametric architecture was discovered. This style takes shapes and tilts them to accentuate the shape it creates once part of a structure. This style of design created fascinating outcomes, which look visually unrelated to the original shape.

The Start.

The first task was to create the model, seeking to find a technique to produce the spiral effect.  Having trialled and appraised several different processes, a process of stacking wood sticks on top of each other from end to end but raised the outside part by one stick was selected.  This process offered the best visual effect but was also strong and rigid.

The End.

Once satisfied with a method of building, the final 1:50 model was produced. Two identical half spirals were created, which were glued together to create the final full spiral. At first, standing with spirals the pointing towards the sky was attempted; but weak points within the building were identified.  An alternative layout was tried, placing the spiral on its side. The structure had improved rigidity but also benefited from creating an interesting structure.

Atmospheric photos of the model, set during the evening, allow visualisation from the user’s perspective. They also show how to maximise the space within the building, and how to interpret the space.

1:20 Rendered Section.

First task was the selection of the section to create the rendered section, seeking to ensure that sufficient structural detail were included, balanced with the complexity of the drawing. The spiral design ensured that the drawing was challenging to produce, but applying a methodical and careful approach, the structure of the spiral was accurately recreated.  Promarkers were selected for the rendering, which were blended together to produce a rich range of colours.
